Wazir Khan Mosque

Wazir Khan Mosque is located in Lahore, Pakistan. The spectacular monument was built within a period of seven years, starting around 1634-1635 A.D. under the reign of Shah Jehan from the Mughal Dynasty. The founder is known to be a honored physician, Hakim Ilmud Din Ansari, who has been granted the title of Wazir (minister) Khan and later on he further grew to be Viceroy of Punjab. The mosque is abundant in Thatta mosaic work, which was quite preferred in the 16th century. It is also famous for the exquisite tile crafts and inlaid pottery (kashi).

The structure is made of such a type of bricks, which were commonly used by the Mughals when they were short on stones. It is situated close to the Delhi gate and it has very interesting architecture, characterized by the distribution of four minarets in the corners of the site – 100 feet high each, five domes and twenty-two-shop bazaar – a design first in its kind as it comes to mosques. The mosque is raised on a platform and could be reached by climbing a flight of stairs.

In the graveyard of the monument the tomb of saint Miran Badshah could be seen, which is relatively older than the mosque itself. Many calligraphic works on extracts of the Quran and Persian poetry and floral patterns adorn the mosque. It is composed of five compartments, on top of each a dome is erected. They all face a courtyard. The most spacious of all is the prayer hall, which could also be recognized by its framed portal.

Lahore is the capital of the Pakistan region Punjab and it is also the second largest city in the country after Karatchi. Its name states "Fort as strong as Iron”. It was given to the city by the great hero mentioned in the sacred scripts Ramayana, Loh. It could easily be said that the city is a cultural capital of Pakistan due to its numerous festivals special events and ancient pieces of architecture, which reveal the past customs and traditions of its inhabitants.

If you are to visit Pakistan, or if you have family and friends there, do not hesitate to contact them using cheap international call rates. It doesn't matter if you want to call Canada, Pakistan or you want to call Poland for example. The rates are almost the same.
